USMCI BioSpecimen Network

About Us

The United States Military Cancer Institute (USMCI) was founded as a component of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in a Congressional mandate. This program promotes cancer research and education in all branches of the military. The USMCI coordinates research efforts and supports military and civilian researchers in several military institutions.

In keeping with this mission, the USMCI has launched a major research initiative called the BioSpecimen Network (BSN). This initiative focuses on establishing a bank of human biological samples such as tissues and blood that are obtained from patients, with their informed consent, in the course of their routine diagnosis and treatment. See BioSpecimen Network brochure.

BSN consists of two main components:

Patients have the option to complete a questionnaire about their medical history, family history, health-related behaviors, and factors that may be associated with developing various diseases or conditions. This information is important in studies focusing on disease prevention, early detection and treatment.
